The situation in Iran is a complicated one, and many different events lead to the current state today. The latest instance was the Iranian missile attack on the Al Assad Air Base. This is an American base located in Iraq, which borders Iran. Thankfully, no one was injured or killed, but it serves as an eye opener that Iran is a relatively well equipped military. For this reason alone the United States needs to be cautious with its actions abroad.
The beginning of this crisis started with the attack on the US embassy in Iraq. The embassy was disturbed by the Kata’ib Hezbollah militia who are Iraqis, but they are supported by Iran. This group was protesting the killing of 27 of their members in a US air strike. The US air strike was brought about because the Kata’ib Hezbollah killed a U.S. contractor.
America retaliated against Iran for these attacks on their embassy by killing Qasem Soleimani. Soleimani was one of the most well known and powerful leaders in Iran. He helped fight ISIS and other terror groups, but Soleimani did not like Americans in the slightest. His killing was not something that any American should be saddened about, especially since hundreds of thousands of Iranians praised Qasem Soleimani and burned American flags, and the Iranian parliament chanted “death to America.”
While this killing was justified, there has to be a military plan for the potential repercussions that will follow. As I said before Iran has a military that is not one that should be taken lightly. The missile attack on the base in Iraq was an example of this. It was very lucky that no Americans were killed and injured. For this reason, it is a question of whether or not revenge is worth American lives and even a potential war. A war with Iran would be costly and extremely deadly. I believe no one in this country wants that.
This is a situation that is still developing and is quite complex. This is why we need to be careful and calculated with our actions as American lives are on the line.
