Our Mock Trial team competing last February, landed an ultimate win for Western Wayne. They took on Valley View in the yearly competition that takes place inside the Scranton Courthouse every year. Both teams demonstrated a professional environment just like a real trial, and executed their cases with their knowledge of law and government.

Every year the Western Wayne Mock Trial team accepts new members and prepares for competitions. Mock Trial competitions works like a legal trial. The laws of the government and rules of fair trial are used and followed in competition. There are three witnesses and three lawyers per team, as well as student timekeepers. Each attorney must direct their witness and cross the opposing team’s witnesses. The goal of the competition is to prove your case and convince the judge and jury to favor your party’s argument.

Whether you are on the side of the plaintiffs or defendants, the teams must be prepared to back up both cases. A team must win two official competitions for each party before moving forward onto the state competition. With the help of their team advisor and lawyer, our Mock Trial team spends time after school to prepare their court case.

“Don’t be afraid to check anything out that intrigues your interest,” The team’s 2017-18 club advisor Ms. Oliveras, said in offering advice for students interested in joining this club. “You might end up finding something that you love doing.”

Mock Trial is a club that any student, underclassmen and upperclassmen, can join. They are always in need of new members who are passionate about government and law. Even if you are not interested in pursuing an attorney as a career choice, Mock Trial is still a fun club to take part. Putting dedication into this team gives students the exciting opportunity to understand how a real trial works.

“Witnesses are equally as important as attorneys, and there’s no shame in being a timekeeper.” said recent graduate Vidya Vanyo who was part of the Mock Trial team throughout her high school career.

With the new school year underway, the Mock Trial team is ready to prepare for their competitions after school. If you are interested, please sign up! This club is always accepting new members and guarantees a fun experience for all involved.
